Welcome!

Welcome to Folk in the Cellar!

Folk in the Cellar is an inclusive and eclectic folk club, with an emphasis on everyone joining in.

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month (except August and Christmas week) at

The MAP Studio Cafe
46 Grafton Rd
Kentish Town
NW5 3DU
7.30 – 11.00pm

£5 cash donation requested, so we can pay our guest artists.

Most evenings feature an extended set from a guest artist or group, but the first half of the evening is open to anyone to share a song, a tune, a poem…… Some evenings are singarounds, where the audience is the star attraction.

We’re not dogmatic about genre, but we are completely unplugged. And we do not talk while people are performing, though joining in is usually welcome!

Please note that Kentish Town tube station is closed for at least a year. We’re still easy to get to. The Overground at Kentish Town is still open, Kentish Town West on the Overground is even closer to the MAP cafe and there are plenty of buses along both Prince of Wales Rd and Kentish Town Rd

Next Event,

Monday May 13 – Water Chorus

Were delighted to welcome back The Water Chorus, who’ve been steadily building a substantial following since their early days as regulars at the club

The Water Chorus are Ali Lawrenson (fiddle, banjo, melodeon), Jack Saville (guitar, bouzouki, bodhran) and Caitlin Chalmers (vocals, shruti box) – three friends who decided that, with so many weird instruments, there was no excuse not to form a folk band.

Their music ranges from the raucously celebratory to the eerily affecting. Punky upbeat arrangements of traditional songs feature Ali’s virtuosic musicianship on fiddle and banjo, whilst atmospheric re-imaginings of almost-forgotten ballads are made hauntingly beautiful by Caitlin’s uniquely emotive voice, all underpinned by Jack’s driving, rhythmic lines on guitar and bouzouki.

With a repertoire that ranges from Irish ballads to Glasgow street songs via Swedish polskas and compositions of their own, they play the music that they love, rooted in the singaround/session traditions that they grew up with.’

Remember that the MAP Cafe is now serving delicious vegan Caribbean food by Seami Kitchen.
