About us

Folk in the Cellar was founded more than 20 years ago by the Northern Celts band. For many years it met in the Cellar of the Constitution Pub in Camden (hence the name). Sadly we were left homeless, (as more seriously were the pub staff) when Young’s Brewery bought the pub and closed it down.

Fortunately we found our new home at the MAP studio cafe, and we’ve kept our name, even though we now meet in an upstairs room

Our emphasis has always been on encouraging people to join in and share their musical talents. A number of our regulars cut their teeth performing in front of others at the Cellar. We’ve always been interested in offering a platform to new and emerging artists, as well as local North London favourites.

We’ve always been unplugged, believing that in a small venue, there’s a much better connection between performer and audience (often the same people anyway) without amps and speakers.

Generally our guest artists are booked because they’ve come to the club and we’ve enjoyed them, or they’re regulars who merit more than a one or two song floor-spot. Sometimes one of the organisers sees someone who knocks them out and they invite them. Generally we don’t respond to cold calling from artists or agents. If you’d like to play, just turn up!

Were an entirely amateur, non-profit set-up, run jointly by a small group of regulars and funded entirely by donations taken on the door, which we use to ensure we can pay our guest artists reasonably for their performance.
